Floriade happens only ONCE EVERY TEN YEARS. I was at the show in
2002 and it was huge! This tour will give us a full day there so you
can take as much of it in as possible. Visitors to Floriade 2012
will have the opportunity to enjoy the most exquisite and
exceptional flowers, plants, trees, fruit and vegetables of the
world exhibited over 40 hectares, 7,000m2 of which are indoor flower
and plant shows.
The central theme of Floriade 2012 will be “Be part of the theatre
in nature, get closer to the quality of life”. This overall theme
will be presented in five core sub-themes, translated into 5 themed
zones on the park. These zones will cover the different aspects of
the relationship between the consumer and the horticultural sector.
‘Green Engine’ portrays horticulture as the green engine of the
economy. ‘Education & Innovation’ relate the story of horticulture
over the years while exploring the future of the sector at the same
time. For ‘Environment’ the central element is the importance of
greenery at home, on the streets and in the working environment.
‘Relax & Heal’ focuses on health, movement (physical wellbeing),
food and enjoying the true flavour of products. Plus, World Show
Stage events will show how international art, culture and
entertainment inspire the horticultural sector and vice versa.
A tidbit of Keukenhof…
Keukenhof That’s the place to see spring blossom. The park is
unique, world famous, and has been one of the most popular
destinations in the Netherlands for sixty years now. Haven’t seen
Keukenhof? Then you haven’t seen the Netherlands. You won’t find
such an abundance of colours and fragrances anywhere else. More than
seven million flowers form a glorious decor for the most beautiful
photos. Come to Keukenhof and enjoy the ultimate spring feeling, the
wonderful works of art, the surprising inspirational gardens and the
many flower shows in three pavilions.
The historical garden is one of the most striking Keukenhof
attractions. An oasis that lives and breathes the atmosphere of a
historic castle garden. Various collections of historical spring
bulbs and tuberous plants are on display, including old tulip
varieties from the Hortus Bulborum (also on our tour) and
17th-century daffodils. Species that were sometimes cultivated for
hundreds of years and are now almost impossible to buy. It is an
unknown fact that, in early spring, this is also the warmest spot in
Keukenhof, on the benches lining the slate wall. In the historical
garden they have recently added the reconstruction of eight
flowerbeds from the oldest Dutch Botanical garden, the Hortus
Botanicus in Leiden (from 1590). Under the watchful eye of founder
Carolus Clusius, albeit in the form of a bust, ancient varieties of
tulips and crocus, anemones, fritillaria and lilies are in glorious
bloom. A visit to the historical garden is a walk through the
highpoints of Dutch flower bulb history.
